The group of Death lives up to its name

[Euro 2004] With Czech, Holland and Germany in this group, as expected, the matches were really dramatic. Czech vs. Holland had become an instant classic (I watched it twice!) What is unexpected though, Germany fell to the B-team of Czech in a must-win situation. Well, many predicted even though Czech is sending the B-team, they still have a lot of incentive and national pride in beating Germany. Congrat to Czech and Holland! And I hope Germany will find better successors to Lothar Matthaus and Jurgen Klinsmann than Ballack and Kuranyi.

Could it be more predictable?

[Euro 2004: Denmark vs. Sweden] 2-2 is the score that would send both team to the next stage (eliminating Italy no matter what they do) 2-2 is indeed the final score. Coincidence? I don't know. Conspiracy? I don't think so 'coz both teams want to win the division and face a 2nd place team in the next round. I'd think these 2 neighbouring nations would be very competitive rivals. Nevertheless, I do believe in self-fulfilling prophecy!

Anyway, Italy has only itself to blame. They didn't play well enough. They don't deserve to advance. Stop being a cry baby!

Again, the trend of players who played great professionally not performing well for national team continues, as I observed since Euro 2000, especially the star strikers from the top leagues, like Henry, Raul, Morientes, Vieri. In contrast, the most heralded hero of the tournament so far, Wayne Rooney (or Nuno Gomes if you're Portugese fan), did not play for top teams.

Maybe all national team coaches could learn something from this?

Emergence of a Superstar

[Euro 2004: England vs. Croatia] I am glad to be a witness of Wayne Rooney's rise to superstardom during Euro 2004. Like his fellow English teammate Michael Owen, his fame is built from sensational performances at the biggest stage for football at a very young age.

On the other hand, I have also witnessed how Owen and Raul, the former prodigies, slowly fading away. I was so touched when I saw Owen nearly missed scoring a goal in the same match that Rooney scored two.

Flithy Rich Says Dirty Things

Gordon Wu, chairman of Hopewell Holdings Ltd (Hong Kong), suggested people dissatisfied with Hong Kong government should emmigrate to other country.

This is very dissapointing coming from a well-educated businessman like Mr. Wu, who received his education from Princeton University in U.S.A., one of the most dedicated advocates of democracy.

And this comment is not even original. His fellow tycoon, Vincent Lo of the Shui On Group, said something similar last month.

Don't they know that most people in Hong Kong are not as rich as them and could not easily emigrate to other countries?

They should remember Hong Kong is not like one of their private property. Pro-democracy people are allowed to live there as well.

Trezeguet 's handball

[Euro 2004: France vs. Croatia] Initially I was so mad that the goal counted. Well, it might turn out to be the goal that helps England to the 2nd stage. So I could live with that. :P

Surround Headphone

I bought this

I have always been interested in surround sound but the technology has not been really matured nor popular. Heard of SACD and DVD-Audio? These two formats are for high resolution and multi-channel music. I have not yet invested in them 'coz I can't play any music with reasonable volume at home. My only hope is headphone.

Dolby has its Dolby Headphone technology that's supposed to be able to simulate surround sound using stereo (your head will still think it's surround) but so far there is no product that combines Dolby Headphone and SACD/DVD-Audio.

This new headphone I bought does no simulation. Instead it really has 6 (or 8?) drivers inside. The surround effect is quite realistic. Too bad the driver quality is not that great. After all, it's more for the computer crowd, i.e., the people that play games and movie using their computer. I heard that surround is really useful for gamers 'coz it allows them to find out whether enemy is shooting from behind or where else. Well, for me using it on music is still kinda fun.

NO Aventuremail!

Gotta admit aventuremail sucks. Most of the time it's
inaccessible.

here is my conspiracy theory:
Fact: after the announcement, they ended up accepting
3000 applicants only.
Fact: more than 3000 people knows about this. In fact,
everyone that doesn't have/like Gmail talked about it.
Fact: it has been down for a large amount of time.

Theory 1: they have no intention to do this well at
all. Outside of those 3000 people, no one knows they
suck.
Theory 2: they are intended to serve 3000 accts, which
costs them probably <$3000. Good money spent for
publicity but they don't have the ability to host 3000
acct. That's pathetic as they are a hosting company!
Who wants their website to be hosted by them?

Conclusion: this company is either incompetent or
scumbag.

I'm spreading the word. Won't let them take advantage
so easily.

Apple Airport Express

This is a new product from Apple. It's multi-purpose: 1) wireless router, 2) USB print server, 3) wireless extender (able to extend the range of wireless coverage provided by another router), 4) stream music to audio equipment.

Personally I think it's more hype than substance. It would be more useful if it allows user to choose the songs from this thing.

BTW, I've finally installed iTunes on my PC (Remember I found it is less efficient than WinAmp and refused to run it?) 'coz I finally realize it allows me to share songs between two different computers running iTunes. That's exactly what I need! I wanna have my desktop (with 240Gb Hard disk!) to store all my music. Then listen to them on notebooks wherever I go. This I would give credits to Apple.

Clie

Sad to hear that Sony is
scaling back on Clie
(at least in US)
The NX-Series are really classics in terms of the new features they introduced. I'm sure they will be in the "Hall of Fame" like the original Mac and Newton. (So hold on to them if you have one and wait to resell them on eBay 10 years later :P )

BigLog = Bigland's Blog

Hey! Even my daughter has her own blog before I do.

Have been sending too many group mails. Might as well use this Blog to save some email traffic!
